GameRanger supports Quake II and you might be lucky enough to find a stock free-for-all map. But if you really want to get into Quake II’s online scene, you should download the Q2 Server Browser and check out everything the community has on offer.

Guide to installing Quake (and mods such as Team Fortress) and optionally setting up a QuakeWorld server
Since there are more and more people buying Quake nowadays due to Steam sales, I thought I would create a brief guide on how to use it. I know there's A LOT I didn't include, but this is just to introduce a new player to the basics.
Installing Quake And A Modern Client (EZQuake)
This section will ensure you have Quake installed with a modern QuakeWorld client.
- Install Quake. Whether you bought it from Steam or you have an original CD, you will be left with a folder that contains files such as quake.exe, qwcl.exe and folders such as ID1.
- Download and install EZQuake from http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/. EZQuake is a modern version of QuakeWorld (ID's multiplayer client). NOTE: Once EZQuake is installed, you no longer need to use Steam. If you want Steam achievements, you have to keep using the original files.
- Run EZQuake. Are you able to start a New Game and play the game as you normally would? If not, something has gone wrong. If you are able to, great. Set all of your options (controls, video, sound, etc) and save by going to the Config tab and selecting 'Save Settings'. The next time you start EZQuake, your settings should be the default.
NOTE: EZQuake is not the only modern Quake or QuakeWorld client that exists. The Quake engine is open source, so many clients have been released. If you have problems with EZQuake or just prefer an alternative, some notable examples include DirectQ, DarkPlaces and Quakespasm.
Installing A Mod (Team Fortress)
This section will teach you how to install any mod.
- Download Team Fortress 2.8 from http://www.gamefront.com/files/9503202. You will be left with a zip file called 'tf28.zip'. Inside the zip file is a single folder called 'FORTRESS'. Unpack this file into your Quake directory. Your Quake directory should now have the ID1 folder and the FORTRESS folder.
- Run EZQuake from the command line (if you don't know how to do this, see the section 'Using A Command Line') by typing 'ezquake-gl.exe +gamedir fortress' (without quotes).
- Find a server to play on (eg. http://www.quakeservers.net/quakeworld/servers/t=tf/ seems to have a server list) and connect to it by typing into EZQuake (you may have to press ESC to get to EZQuake's command line): /connect SERVERIP. Replace SERVERIP with the server you want to connect to. For example, /connect tastyspleen.net:26666 will connect to a server in the USA (this address was taken from the QuakeServers.net list).
- Once you are connected, the game will download the required maps automatically. This can take extremely long. If you don't have the patience and you can download the maps from somewhere much quicker (or if you have them already), create a directory in your FORTRESS folder called 'maps' and place the maps in there. Maps typically end in the file extension .bsp
- Have fun :)
NOTE: Every mod will have different keys and commands. Team Fortress has a multitude of them, such as switching classes, throwing grenades, reloading, etc. Once you get serious about the game, you will want to learn how to create a config file and have each of the important commands bound to keys. It goes beyond the scope of this tutorial so use a search engine :)
NOTE 2: If you wanted to play a different mod, you would repeat the same procedure but instead of using '+gamedir fortress', you would use '+gamedir whatever_your_mod_is_called'. This will also allow you to play the mission packs such as Scourge Of Armagon and Dissolution Of Eternity.
Installing Your Own QuakeWorld Server (Team Fortress)
This section will teach you how to start your own QuakeWorld server (eg. if you want to play against your friends on a LAN)
- Download the QuakeWorld server from http://www.gamefront.com/files/3124372/qw233_0005_zip (previously http://www.quakeworld.net/files/quakeworld/qw233-0005.zip which is no longer available. Thanks to /u/Jasondazombie for noticing!)
- Unpack the 'qwsv.exe' file from the zip file into your Quake directory. You do not need to unpack any of the other files.
- You need to create a server.cfg that defines how your server will operate (for example, if you wanted to run a different game type). Team Fortress comes with a default server.cfg in the FORTRESS directory so you can just use that. It will look like:
hostname 'TF 2.5'
serverinfo maxspectators '
serverinfo s off
serverinfo g off
deathmatch 3
teamplay 31?TF2.5
timelimit 30
fraglimit 100
samelevel 2
serverinfo n 1
map 2fort4
- Change the map to the default map you want your server to start with. Remember, you need to already have the map downloaded and placed into the FORTRESSmaps folder. For example, if I wanted to run Spazball, which has the file spaz4.bsp, I would change the map parameter to spaz4
- Run the server by opening up a command line and typing 'qwsv.exe +gamedir fortress +exec server.cfg'.
- Connect to your server (/connect 127.0.0.1 since 127.0.0.1 is your own computer) and if all went well, you should be in a Team Fortress game (you should see a TF map rather than the standard Quake map). If you want others to join, they have to connect to your computer's IP. If you are playing on a LAN, you can find your IP by going to a command line and typing 'ipconfig' (without quotes). You will be given information such as IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1. In this case, others would type /connect 192.168.1.1.
Using A Command Line
This section will teach you how to use a command line (CLI) in Windows.
- Open the command prompt by going to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Alternatively, go to Start -> Run and type cmd. If all was successful, a black box should be on your screen. This is the command line.
- To navigate to a folder, you use the 'cd' command. For example, if your folder is at C:GamesQuake, you would use 'cd C:GamesQuake' (without quotes). If there are spaces in the folder, such as C:Program Files (x86)Quake, you would need quotes but only around the folder path. For example, cd 'C:Program Files (x86)Quake'
- Once you have navigated to your folder, your blinking cursor should say the folder name such as 'C:Program Files (x86)Quake> _' where the _ is the blinking cursor.
